The Transylvanian Hound History
This dog originated from Hungarian Agar in the late 9th century. Nobility sought after this dog during the middle ages for use as a hunting companion.
Where did it Come From?
Invaders brought these dogs to Hungary during the invasion of the Magyar tribes which were popular for hunting. Furthermore settlers brought the breed to Carpathian mountains due to development of forestry and agriculture. Breeders formed two types of Transylvanian Hounds: one with long legs who’s capable of hunting big game, and the other with short legs capable of hunting small game.
Starting in 1968, breeding efforts were made to save the dwindling breed, and it is now back in significant numbers with long-legged Transylvanian Hound existing in Hungary and Romania. However, the short-legged Transylvanian Hound no longer exists. In 1963 the FCI recognized the breed and this helped save it.
What Were They Bred For?
Breeders created this breed to be a companion for hunting. By its nature, this breed is defensive and alert. They have the ability to bravely guard their property against potential threats. However despite the high energy this breed has they can make as a good family pet. They are calm and good mannered with those whom they trust.

This breed varies in color. They can be black and tan with white markings but others can have yellow markings. They typically have a dark body with yellow paws and snout. The snout can also have white markings on it as well.
